Types of Gifts

Planned giving is a wonderful way to support WHRO. Many people think of it as deferred giving because the most common gift is one through a will, living trust, or other estate document.  Should you decide to name WHRO as a beneficiary in your plans, you will need to know that WHRO’s legal name is Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association, Inc.  WHRO is located at 5200 Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk, VA  23508 and is a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  WHRO’s tax identification number is 54-0843118

Estate Gifts
These are a critical source of funding for WHRO, and they are easy to do. Simply decide if you would like to give WHRO a specific dollar amount, a set percentage of your estate, or a specific asset, or include WHRO as a contingent or residual beneficiary of your estate.

Retirement and Insurance
Another simple way to support WHRO is to name us as beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy.

Securities
You may find that making a gift of appreciated securities can provide you with an ideal way to donate to WHRO. There are several benefits to making your gift in the form of appreciated assets. You would, of course, be entitled to a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair market value of your securities. In addition, you would avoid the capital gains taxes on the sale of your assets. If you were to sell your stocks or mutual funds yourself, you would generate a tax liability in the form of a capital gain. By donating the security directly to WHRO, you avoid that tax liability.

Securities can be electronically transferred by your broker to WHRO's broker, or you can send the stock certificates directly to us or our broker by certified mail. The process is simple and we can work with you so that the funds can support the program area of your choice.

Charitable Remainder Trust
The charitable remainder trust is an irrevocable trust that holds and invests assets for the benefit of one or more non-charitable beneficiaries and for WHRO.  The CRT allows an individual or spouse to receive income for life, or for a term of years, and then upon the second death, or when the term of years expires, the remaining balance would be distributed to WHRO.  The donor is entitled to a current income tax deduction based on the present value of the gift, avoids a capital gain tax, and WHRO receives the benefit of the untaxed appreciation.

Charitable Annuity
In a charitable annuity, the donor makes a current gift to WHRO in return for an agreement to pay a fixed percentage rate of return on that gift for the life of the donor or another person, or for a term of years.  As with a charitable remainder trust, the gift can be of appreciated property, and the unpaid capital gains liability can be avoided.  Actuarial tables determine the present value of the charitable gift.

Charitable Lead Trust
In an irrevocable CLT the interest of WHRO comes first, and the grantor receives an income tax deduction at the creation of the trust.  WHRO receives the current income.  The spouse (or other beneficiary) receives a remainder interest.  This secures a present income tax deduction for the donor, while assuring availability of funds for children or grandchildren at a future date.

Memorial Gifts
Honor the memory of a loved one, or celebrate a milestone event with a tribute gift to WHRO.  When a memorial or tribute gift is received, WHRO sends notification to the person (or the family of the person) in whose name the gift was made. WHRO does not include the amount of the gift. The donor also receives a letter of acknowledgment, confirming the amount of the gift and indicating that the intended recipient has been notified of the gift.  All memorial and tribute gifts are directed to WHRO’s endowment, ensuring WHRO continues its heritage of providing outstanding programming and educational services for generations to come.  For more information regarding memorial gifts, please call Homer Babbitt at 889-9334 or email homer.babbitt@whro.org.
